Battery and Charging System Tester, 12 V

Compact tester for checking the condition of 12 V batteries and vehicle charging systems.

The tester connects directly to the battery terminals. Separate LED groups provide an immediate assessment of the battery and alternator output.

Battery-Test LEDs

• Red: battery discharged or possibly defective
• Yellow: battery condition acceptable, but charging is recommended
• Green: battery charge condition is very good

If the red LED remains illuminated after charging and repeating the test, the battery is defective.

Charging-System LEDs

• Red: charging voltage too high or charging system defective
• Green: charging system operating correctly
• Yellow: charging system operating; check the battery condition

If only a battery-test LED illuminates during the charging-system test, check the drive belt, alternator regulator, carbon brushes and wiring.

Testing the Battery Voltage

1. Switch on the ignition without starting the engine.
2. Switch on the high-beam headlights for approximately one minute.
3. Switch off the lights and ignition.
4. Immediately connect the red test lead to the positive terminal and the black test lead to the negative terminal.
5. Read the result using the battery-test LEDs.

Testing the Charging Voltage

1. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
2. Connect the red test lead to the positive terminal and the black test lead to the negative terminal.
3. Switch on the headlights.
4. Briefly increase the engine speed to approximately 2000 rpm for one second.
5. Read the result using the charging-system LEDs.
