BMW Engine Timing Tool Kit N43B16 N43B20 1.6L 2.0L Chain Drive

This professional engine timing tool kit is designed for BMW petrol engines N43B16 and N43B20 with 1.6L and 2.0L displacement. It is suitable for precise timing adjustment, balance shaft alignment, and engine repair procedures involving timing chain systems.

The set is engineered for both professional workshops and advanced users requiring full control over engine timing operations.

Functionality

The kit includes all necessary special tools for:

• Camshaft timing adjustment
• Balance shaft locking and alignment
• Flywheel locking
• Loosening of crankshaft central bolt (automatic transmission applications)

It ensures precise synchronization of engine components during service procedures.

The foam insert includes a dedicated cut-out for a pre-tension torque wrench (0.6 Nm, Art. No. 106650), commonly used in BMW workshops (may already be available separately).

Important Note

Before performing timing adjustments, the locking mechanism of the intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters must be checked.

If necessary, the adjusters must be rotated to engage the locking mechanism.
If locking is not possible, correct timing adjustment cannot be achieved and the adjuster units must be replaced.

Procedure (Reference: BMW E90 318i N43B20A)

• Remove air filter housing with mass airflow sensor
• Remove cylinder head cover
• Remove auxiliary drive belt (generator)
• Remove vibration damper
• Fix engine in installation position
• Lower front axle carrier
• Remove oil pan
• Remove both solenoid valves

Repair Note

After loosening the crankshaft central bolt, the timing chain sprocket and oil pump sprocket are no longer force-locked to the crankshaft.

The balance shafts will rotate and must be re-adjusted during reassembly.

Torque Specifications

• Crankshaft pulley / damper central bolt: 300 Nm
• Crankshaft pulley bolts: 35 Nm
• Camshaft sprocket: 20 Nm + 180°
• Chain tensioner: 65 Nm
• Oil pan bolts: 30 Nm
• Cylinder head cover: M8: 15 Nm / M6: 10 Nm
• Guide rail bolts: upper 14 Nm / lower 20 Nm
• Upper guide rail: 8 Nm
• Guide rail bolt plugs: upper 25 Nm / lower 32 Nm
