This special tool set is designed for removing and installing the front crankshaft oil seal on BMW N20 and N26 engines.

The procedure is largely identical for all compatible engine versions. The following instructions refer specifically to N20 and N26 engines.

To avoid errors caused by differences between vehicle versions, always consult suitable workshop documentation or the vehicle manufacturer’s repair instructions.

Compatible Crankshaft Oil Seals

For use with crankshaft oil seals with the following comparison numbers:

Only use oil seals supplied with an installation sleeve.

Required Preparatory Work

Remove the auxiliary drive belt.
Remove the vibration damper.
Do not loosen the central crankshaft bolt.
Only loosen and remove the M8 x 35 mm screws.

Removal

Position the extraction adapter on the crankshaft oil seal.
Screw the adapter into the oil seal and tighten it to 50 Nm.
Screw in the extraction spindle to pull out the oil seal.
Depending on the installation position, it may be necessary to repeat the extraction procedure.

Installation

Only use a crankshaft oil seal supplied with an installation sleeve.
Carefully slide the oil seal onto the crankshaft adapter until the installation sleeve can be removed.
Secure the adapter to the crankshaft using two screws.
Apply an additional bead of silicone sealing compound to the oil seal in the area between the crankcase and the oil sump sealing joint.
Use the installation bell and draw-in nut to press the radial shaft seal in until it reaches the stop.
Remove the tool.
Reinstall the vibration damper.

Tightening torque for the vibration damper on N20 and N26 engines: 35 Nm.

Reinstall the auxiliary drive belt.

Extension for S55 Engines

For BMW S55 engines, extension Item no. 120729 is additionally required.
