This specialized timing tool set is designed for Ford Duratec Dragon 3-cylinder engines (1.2L and 1.5L), enabling accurate adjustment of engine timing during timing belt replacement and maintenance procedures.

These engines utilize a belt-in-oil system, requiring precise alignment to ensure correct operation and prevent premature wear or engine damage.

Timing Adjustment Procedure

All timing belt pulleys are equipped with alignment markings:

  • Camshaft sprockets have arrow markings that must face each other
  • The crankshaft has two reference points, with the center aligned to the arrow on the engine block

Unlike previous engine generations, camshaft alignment cannot be performed using a rear alignment bar.

Both intake and exhaust camshafts feature a square drive near the first bearing journal, which is used for precise positioning at top dead center (TDC) of cylinder 1.

Tool Function & Design

The flywheel locking tool is installed in place of the starter motor and acts as a counter-holding device during loosening and tightening of the crankshaft pulley.

Due to the design of newer engines (1.0L / 1.5L EcoBoost, 1.2L / 1.5L Duratec Dragon, 2.0L EcoBlue), the starter is mounted differently using studs, making this tool essential for handling high torque loads.

Practical Tip

The flywheel locking tool (as 303-1643) is mounted at the original starter position.
The adjustable locking block engages with the ring gear and is secured via a locking screw.

For rotating the engine or checking timing, simply release and disengage the locking block from the gear.

Important Technical Note

Incorrect oil specifications or extended service intervals can lead to premature timing belt wear.

  • Belt material degradation can clog the oil pump
  • Reduced oil pressure may occur
  • Swollen belt teeth can cause misalignment or skipping

Always use the correct oil specification for these engines.

Technical Advantage

Unlike lower-quality tool sets, this design does not require spacers or washers for positioning the locking tool, eliminating the risk of components falling into the transmission housing.

OEM numbers are for reference purposes only and do not imply original manufacturer tools.

This special tool set covers the Duratec Dragon engine generation from Ford Motor Company. Like the EcoBoost engines, these units use a timing belt running in an oil bath.

Note:
Incorrect oil specifications or improper service intervals can cause the timing belt to wear significantly before its scheduled replacement interval.
Fragments of the belt may clog the oil pump, leading to a drop in oil pressure. Swollen belt teeth are subjected to stress each time they disengage from the sprockets, which can result in the belt skipping teeth.
Always ensure the correct oil specification is used for these engines.

Unlike the previous generation, it is no longer possible to lock the camshafts at the rear using a straight edge. The intake and exhaust camshafts now feature a square drive at the front end, just behind the first camshaft bearings. This square section is used for precise alignment and for setting Top Dead Center (TDC) of cylinder 1.

This flywheel locking and holding tool is installed in place of the starter motor and is used as a counter-hold. In newer generations of 1.0L and 1.5L EcoBoost, 1.2L and 1.5L Duratec Dragon, and 2.0L EcoBlue engines, the starter is no longer mounted longitudinally in the conventional way, but instead secured with two stud bolts against the direction of travel.

This special tool is essential to counteract the very high torque required to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt and to hold it securely during tightening.

Tip:
The flywheel holding tool (equivalent to Ford 303-1643) is mounted using the original starter mounting points. The adjustable locking block with the locking tooth is inserted into the ring gear and secured with a bolt.
For checking the timing or rotating the engine, it is sufficient to loosen the locking block and slide it out of the ring gear.

NOTE:
We use a tool designed to match the original specification. With cheaper aftermarket versions, the locking tool often needs to be spaced using multiple washers.
When using our Steelmaxx tool, there is NO risk of washers accidentally falling into the large opening of the transmission bell housing.
