Engine Timing Tool Kit BMW N20 / N26

This engine timing tool kit is designed for accurate adjustment and locking of the timing system on BMW N20 and N26 petrol engines. It is suitable for a wide range of BMW models equipped with these turbocharged 4-cylinder engines.

Functionality

The kit enables precise alignment of the camshaft, correct pre-tensioning of the timing chain, and accurate adjustment of the sensor wheels. It ensures proper synchronization of engine components, reducing the risk of timing errors and engine damage during maintenance procedures.

These instructions describe the required procedures for setting the camshaft and crankshaft positions, which must be carried out after removal of the cylinder head, camshafts, or timing chain.

For engines equipped with variable valve timing (VVT), it is recommended to mark the camshaft drive components before disassembly.

Note: To remove/install the timing chain, the oil pan must be removed.

ENGINE TIMING ADJUSTMENT

1. Remove the valve cover and set cylinder 1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the firing stroke.
(Cylinder 1 is located on the timing chain side.)

Remove the cover plate on the cylinder block and install tool (1).
Ensure the tool is correctly seated.

2. Ensure that the profile flats on the intake camshaft for cylinder 1 are in the correct position and that the part number on the camshaft is visible (Fig. 1).

3. Install tool (2) on the intake camshaft (Fig. 2).
Ensure the alignment tool fits correctly onto the camshaft profile flats.

Repeat this procedure on the exhaust camshaft (Fig. 3).

Note: If the camshaft alignment tool cannot be installed, the camshaft position is incorrect.

4. Secure tool (3) with bolts (Fig. 4).
Insert the locking pins of tool (3).

Note: If the locking pins of gauge (3) cannot be inserted, the position of the trigger wheel (sensor wheel) is incorrect.

VANOS ADJUSTMENT

5. Loosen the mounting bolts on each camshaft adjuster (VANOS unit) (Fig. 5) and rotate the camshafts until tool (3) can be installed.

PRE-TENSIONING THE TIMING CHAIN

6. Loosen the timing chain tensioner fastening (Fig. 6).

7. Install tool (4) and screw in the adjusting bolt until it contacts the timing chain guide rail.
Do not overtighten the adjusting screw.

Pre-tension the timing chain using tool (4) and a torque wrench (not included) to the specified torque.

8. Tighten the mounting bolts on each camshaft adjuster to the specified torque and angle.

9. Remove all tools and reinstall the timing chain tensioner.

10. Rotate the crankshaft two full turns clockwise and recheck the engine timing.
Ensure all alignment tools are correctly positioned.

11. If the timing is correctly set, remove all tools and reassemble the engine completely.

Note:
If additional work on the balance shaft or oil pump drive is required, additional special tools will be necessary.
