Professional special tool designed for accurate determination of top dead center (TDC), ignition TDC and piston position on petrol and diesel engines.
Especially suitable for vehicles that do not feature factory TDC markings. The tool enables precise determination of piston top dead center during engine timing procedures and repair work.
Suitable for petrol and diesel engines and commonly used during:
- Timing belt replacement
- Cylinder head gasket replacement
- Engine timing adjustment
- Engine overhaul procedures
- Ignition timing inspection and adjustment
The connection hose is screwed into the spark plug or glow plug thread using the appropriate adapter. For engines with deep spark plug wells, the supplied aluminum extension tubes can be used.
The measuring unit is then mounted in a suitable position using the magnetic holder and connected to the hose.
Operating Instructions
Step 1 – Initial Positioning
Slowly rotate the crankshaft in the normal engine rotation direction until the piston inside the measuring unit first moves upward and then downward again.
When the piston reaches the lowest point, place a marking on the crankshaft pulley at the 6 o’clock position.
Step 2 – Crankshaft Rotation
Rotate the crankshaft:
- one complete revolution
- plus an additional 3/4 revolution
until the pulley marking reaches the 3 o’clock position.
Step 3 – Precision Measurement
Now slowly and evenly rotate the crankshaft through another 1/4 revolution until the indicator piston inside the measuring unit moves upward and then downward again.
When the piston reaches the lowest position, extend the pulley marking onto the front engine cover.
Step 4 – Verification Procedure
Repeat step 2 by rotating the crankshaft:
- one complete revolution
- plus another 3/4 revolution
until the pulley marking again reaches the 3 o’clock position.
Then slowly and evenly rotate the crankshaft through another 1/4 revolution until the indicator piston again moves upward and returns to the lowest position.
Step 5 – Final TDC Alignment
Check the alignment between:
- the crankshaft pulley marking
- the front engine cover marking
If the markings are not perfectly aligned:
- remove the pulley marking
- correct it according to the front cover marking
Repeat the complete procedure until both markings align perfectly.
Once both markings are precisely aligned, the exact top dead center (TDC) position has been determined.
